Sizing, Fitting and Level of Arch Support

Please see the below information about how to get the correct Size, the correct Fit and the correct Level of Arch Support when you are purchasing your new pair of Archies Flip Flops.

Size Guide

Archies Flip flops are unisex flip-flops, we do not have a separate size system for men and women.  Archies Flip flops sizing runs very true to your normal US running shoe size (for both men and women), so we suggest to select that for your size.

If you are often different sizes in different brands, or if you have any doubts as to which size to choose and or you simply want to confirm your size selection, then we suggest to measure your foot length using the instructions below and check the recommended corresponding size via the Archies Flip flops size conversion chart.

Women’s Size Conversion Chart

Using your normal ladies running shoe size, simply use the size conversion chart to help you choose your Archies Flip flops unisex size. If you do not own a pair of running shoes, just select your most common ladies shoe size.

The sizes that are marked on the bottom of the flip flop are unisex sizes.

E.g – If you order a Unisex 7 (Size US Men’s 7 / US Women’s 8), the flip flop you will receive will be marked with the unisex sizes (US 7 UK 6 EURO 40), however, it will be the exact equivalent of the women’s size (US 8 UK 5.5 EURO 39).  This does not change anything with regards to ordering. You can see the equivalent women's sizes in the size conversion chart and they are already converted for you at the checkout.

Men’s Size Conversion Chart

Using your normal men’s running shoe size, simply use the size conversion chart to help choose your Archies Flip flops unisex size. If you do not own a pair of running shoes, just select your most common men’s shoe size.

The sizes that are marked on the bottom of the flip flops are unisex sizes which are the exact same as men's sizes. E.g – If you order a Unisex Size 10 (US Men’s 10 / US Women’s 11), the flip flop you will receive will be marked with the men’s sizes (US 10 UK 9 EURO 45).

So just order your normal men's size!

Fitting

Fitting in terms of Width

In terms of width, Archies Flip Flops are designed to be a reasonably narrow fitting flip flop. The outside edge of the foot hangs over the edge to some extent in most people, so please do not be concerned if this is the case for you, as this is the normal fit for Archies Flip Flops (as per the below image).

It is important to note, that while the foot overhangs to some extent in most people, it is quite rare that we cannot fit Archies Flip Flops to someone’s feet, no matter how wide or narrow they are. Even in the case that you have a bunion that overhangs, this is ok, the most important thing is that the flip flop is comfortable and the orthotic sits in the correct position on the foot.

Please see the image below of  normal / acceptable overhang.

 Fitting in terms of length

In terms of length, the flip flops were designed with a reasonably ‘snug / tight’ fit in mind. If you go too big in terms of length, the orthotic does not sit in the correct position on the foot. It is important to note, that it is not a concern if some of the back edge of the heel hangs over the edge of the flip flop (as per the below image).

Of course, if your heel is completely over the edge of the heel cup and squashing down on the rim of the flip flop, then that is different, however, some heel overhang is ok. Again, the most important thing is that the flip flop is comfortable and the orthotic sits in the correct position on the foot.

Please see the image below of acceptable overhang: Please see the image below of too much overhang:

Archies Flip flops have a tighter strap

Please click here for a quick video demonstration of why a tighter flip flop strap is important for normal foot function.

Archies Flip flops have been designed with a tighter strap than normal flip flops, this is because in flip flops with a loose strap, the toes claw down in an attempt to keep the flip flops on the feet.

Normally as you swing your leg through the air in preparation for the foot contacting the ground, the toes are supposed to point/bend upwards. When the toes point/bend upwards, this activates the arch of the foot which helps provide protection and support to the vital structures of the feet.

When the toes claw down such as when trying to keep the flip flops on the feet, the arch flattens and the foot contacts the grounds in an abnormal sequence which means it does not get the protective support from the arch like it’s supposed to.

This constant toe clawing can overuse the tendons of the feet leading to problems such as tendonitis and the abnormal foot contact with the ground and it’s negative effect on the arch can leave the foot vulnerable to stress and potential injury such as plantar fasciists.

The tighter strap found in Archies Flip flops may help to reduce toe clawing which may enable you to walk more naturally. It is important to know, that if the strap feels a little too tight at first, do not worry, the strap is very elastic, within a few days of wear, the strap will gradually stretch and mould to the shape of your feet.

However, if the strap continues to feel too tight, it is VERY EASY to stretch the strap and the toe pole to instantly decrease the tightness.

How to stretch the strap on Archies Flip flops:

Please click here for a quick instructional video on how to stretch your strap of your flip flops.

1. Before stretching the strap, you should always inspect the underside of the strap for a joining line. Occasionally, a joining line will be present and is indicated by a faint line through the underside of the strap. While the strap is very strong, if you stretch the strap directly on a joining line, it can break easily, so never stretch the strap directly on a joining line!

2. You should also never stretch the strap directly where it joins onto the outside and inside of the base as this will cause it to tear away from the base.

 a) NEVER stretch at the strap insertions to the base! b) NEVER stretch directly on a joining line!

3. To stretch the strap, simply hold the strap between your fingers and in small little increments stretch each section of the strap where it feels too tight. You can do the same for the toe pole if this feels too tight.

4. Continue to do this, trying the flip flop on and off, stretching the strap and toe pole until it has reached your desired level of tightness.

It is important to note, that while the straps are very elastic, once stretched, the strap will not return to its original tightness, so please be careful not to overdo the stretching!

Level of Arch Support

It is impossible to adequately cater for all feet with one arch profile, as a result, Archies Flip flops come in a Standard Arch support model and a High Arch Support model. Having the two arch profiles allows us better cater for you arch type and support needs.

Which one is better, the High Arch or the Standard Arch?

One arch profile is not necessarily better than the other. Both arch profiles have substantial orthotic / arch support and have a similar amount of support to that found in "off the shelf" orthotics. It’s just that the High Arch has increased support in comparison to the Standard Arch and one arch profile may be more suited to your foot type, personal preference and what you are used to. E.g - If you are used to wearing orthotics or other support footwear.

So, how do I know which model is the right one for me?

This is very easy and is not a big decision!

Arch Profile:

Select if:

High Arch

- If you are used to wearing orthotics or other supportive shoes and sandals.

- If you have high or normal type arches.

Standard Arch

- If you are not used to wearing orthotics or supportive footwear.

- If you have low arches / flat feet as the High Arch will likely feel that it has too much support (unless of course you are used to wearing orthotics with a lot of support).

- If unsure of which arch profile to go with, definitely go with the Standard Arch as it contains legitimate orthotic support, is super comfortable and almost every person absolutely loves and raves about this flip flop! You can consider going for the High Arch for your next pair, once your feet are used to having the support.

Getting used to the feel of Archies

Most people put on Archies Flip Flops and they find them to be instantly and unbelievably comfortable! However, for some people, getting used to the support can take some time and in some occasions you may even experience some soreness. In the unlikely event your flip flops are not instantly comfortable, do not worry, after several days of wear, the flip flops will gradually mould to the shape of your foot and will become much more comfortable!

If you feel you have given the flip flops a good try and they are not starting to get much more comfortable (they should be very comfortable!), then it is likely that the arch profile that you have chosen is not the right one for your foot. In this case, the best thing would be to try the other arch profile and in most cases the result is an immediate improvement in comfort level!

In the unlikely instance that you are not 100% satisfied with your chosen arch profile, do not stress, we have an awesome returns policy! No charges to swap them if they are in a new condition and just $10.00 to swap them if they have been worn. Must be with 30 days of delivery. See our Exchanges, Refunds & Warranty Policy for further information.

It is important to note; a bit of soreness when wearing the flip flops in can be the normal experience for some people, however, if you experience actual pain then you should not push through this. If soreness or pain persist, discontinue wearing the flip flops and please contact your health care professional.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the arch type, please feel free to contact our customer service team at customerservice@archiesfootwear.com
